Founded in 1935, the University of Tennessee Research Foundation (UTRF) is the 2nd oldest university technology transfer organization in the United States. UTRF is a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to take ideas and discoveries created throughout the UT System and turn them into products and services that improve the quality of life for people across the state and throughout the world.
With offices in both Knoxville and Memphis, UTRF’s primary focus is identifying, protecting, marketing and licensing intellectual property created at the University of Tennessee. These efforts result in new opportunities for collaborative research with industry and government, the generation of new revenues for the university and its inventors, the formation of new companies that further economic development in the state, and the creation of new jobs for both students and local citizens.
In addition to its technology transfer role, UTRF also promotes economic development through the operation of business incubation facilities, the management of maturation funding programs and entrepreneurial programming for faculty and staff, the formation of strategic partnerships, and its involvement in the development of UT initiatives, such as the UT Research Park.
