Dr. Malone brings more than two decades of dynamic leadership experience across advanced research and commercialization programs, making him an outstanding choice to lead the next chapter of growth and innovation at the UT Research Park.

Dr. Malone’s impressive track record in fostering research-driven initiatives and spearheading strategic development aligns perfectly with our mission at the UT Research Park. His leadership will be pivotal as we expand our role as a catalyst for innovation, supporting both the University of Tennessee’s research enterprises and the diverse needs of our commercial partners.

A Proven Leader with a Vision for Growth

Before joining CFDC, Dr. Malone served as President and CEO of the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center, where his visionary leadership transformed a 200-acre campus into a thriving research ecosystem. Under his direction, the center saw a 50% increase in revenue within three years and expanded its footprint to key research hubs across Virginia, including partnerships with the prestigious Thomas Jefferson National Lab.

Throughout his career, Dr. Malone has demonstrated a commitment to advancing technology through strategic planning, real estate development, and funding initiatives. He has a remarkable ability to bring together public, private, and academic sectors, positioning him to support the unique demands of the UT Research Park.

Strengthening Collaboration Across East Tennessee’s Tech Ecosystem

Central to Dr. Malone’s vision for the UT Research Park is fostering collaboration within the greater tech ecosystem of East Tennessee and the Knoxville area. His leadership will focus on deepening partnerships between academia, commercial tenants, and the government to accelerate technological innovation and economic growth.

Dr. Malone’s previous work at the Virginia Tech Corporate Research Center was marked by significant collaboration with regional tech hubs, and he aims to bring the same level of connectivity to East Tennessee. By uniting the University of Tennessee with the broader Knoxville tech community, including startups, established industries, and research institutions, Dr. Malone plans to position the UT Research Park as a regional leader in areas such as clean energy, health sciences, and advanced manufacturing.

Driving Innovation Through Collaboration

A Ph.D. graduate in Aerospace Engineering from Virginia Tech, Dr. Malone has been a pivotal force in numerous ventures at the intersection of science, technology, and entrepreneurship. As co-founder and CEO of Phoenix Integration, Dr. Malone drove the company’s growth, capturing partnerships with top aerospace companies before a successful exit. He has also served as Chief Operating Officer of Intrexon (now Precigen), guiding the company through its early development and eventual IPO. His collaborative efforts have forged alliances with major corporations such as Boeing, GE, Johnson & Johnson, Medtronic, and DARPA, highlighting his commitment to innovation through partnership.

At the UT Research Park, Dr. Malone’s leadership will not only enhance the University of Tennessee’s research capabilities but also attract commercial tenants and foster collaborations between academia and industry.
